Penganga project canal gets green clearance

May 30, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - ADILABAD:

The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has given the crucial environmental clearance for the right flank canal of the inter-State Lower Penganga Project (LPP) vide its order number J-12011/28/2012-IA.I issued on May 28. This was a much awaited development in Adilabad as the RFC is designed to irrigate about 50,000 acres in Tamsi, Jainad and Bela mandals in Adilabad district.

The LPP will be constructed across the Penganga river, a major tributary of Godavari, in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra. The Telangana government has a 12 per cent share in the project with regard to the RFC and it comes to about Rs. 1,200 crore in terms of share in cost.

The LPP was already given clearance by the Central Water Commission on feasibility and water sharing and other required clearances during the preceding years. The environmental clearance now puts the ball in the court of the Telangana State government as it needs to accord administrative sanction to proceed further.
