Only two model schools operational in Khammam

Seven more are likely to become functional in the next academic year

Though it has been close to two and a half years since the Ministry of Human Resource Development approved a plan of action to set up model schools, one each in around 30 Educationally Backward Blocks (EBBs) in the district, only two model schools have become operational so far.

The predominantly tribal populated district, encompassing around 30 EBBs, has only two model schools – one each in Karepalli and Penuballi mandals. The neighbouring Warangal district has around 30 model schools.

The model schools concept was introduced under the Centre-sponsored Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA) scheme in EBBs with an objective to provide quality secondary education in English medium to rural students of backward areas.

Although land acquisition has been completed in respect of around 17 model schools after a series of initial hiccups last year, only seven model schools are likely to become functional in the next academic year.

The construction of a permanent building for the existing model school in Karepalli mandal has reached the final stage, said K. Ravindranath Reddy, District Educational Officer.

Seven new model schools will be opened – one each in Venkatapuram, Chandrugonda, Palvancha, Yerrupalem, Garla, Chintakani and Pinapaka mandals in the second phase in the ensuing academic year, he said, adding that the total number of model schools would reach nine in the coming academic year.
