Telangana State is going ahead with the irrigation project without approaching the concerned authorities, says Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, YSRC president.

June 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 11:12 am IST - HYDERABAD:

President of YSR Congress and Leader of Opposition in Assembly Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy on Sunday objected to the construction of Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift irrigation Project by Telangana government to lift 90 TMC from river Krishna in foreshore of Srisailam reservoir, saying it would deprive Rayalaseema, Nellore and Prakasam districts of irrigation water.

Writes letter to

Union Minister

In a letter to Union Minister for Water Resources Uma Bharati, he quoted the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act and said as per Section-84, an Apex Council for Godavari and Krishna river water resources and their Management Boards have to be constituted by the Central government. He said it was categorically stated Section 84 (3) that the functioning of the Apex Council includes planning and approval of proposals for construction of new projects, if any, based on Godavari or Krishna river water after getting the proposal appraised and recommended by the River Management Boards and by the Central Water Commission wherever required. He said Telangana State was going ahead with the irrigation project without approaching the concerned authorities—Krishna River Management Board and the Apex Council for appraisal and approval for the construction of the Lift Irrigation Scheme.

The ayacut under Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar projects would have difficulties with the Palamuru lift irrigation project for which Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had laid foundation stone on June 11.

He brought to the notice of the Union Minister that the project did not have any allocation by any Awards granted by the Tribunals constituted under the Inter-State River Water Disputes Act, 1956.

Mr. Jagan requested the Union Minister to intervene and resolve the issue between the two states as per AP Reorganisation Act.
