New chief of Civil Supplies’ vigilance wing

The government has appointed former Army officer Col. M. Surya Prakash (retd.) as chief of Civil Supplies Department’s Vigilance and Enforcement Wing.

The enforcement wing is presently working under retired Superintendent of Police rank officers, but the government decided to refine the wing by bringing in a retired Army officer to keep a strict check on corruption in the public distribution system and prevent malpractices by rice millers and transport contractors.

Col. Surya Prakash who worked for Indian Army for 32 years will assume charge on February 1 and five teams will work under him. The government issued the orders to this effect on Thursday.

Col Surya Prakash was commissioned into the Indian Army in 1977 and he worked in different sectors in places like Laddakh, Baramullah, Jammu and Kashsmir and participated in prestigious Operation Blue Star, Operation Rakshak and Operation Vijay and Parakram, according to a release from the Department of Civil Supplies.

Telangana Civil Supplies Enforcement Wing monitored all checks done by Civil Supplies Department and its responsibility would be to prevent diversion of basic commodities supplied to fair price shops and check government, private godowns, stage I, stage 2 transport vehicles. It would also inspect any e-POS, IRIS machine performance at ration shops and changes after the implementation of this machines, GPS, Supply Chain Management also, according to a release.

The wing would book cases if found any fraud or malpractice anywhere in the State and give reports to government, District Collectors and Civil Supplies Corporation to initiate necessary action. If necessary PD Act would also be invoked against regular defaulters, the release added.
