Mild tension broke out near the Collectorate here on Sunday when the activists of the Lambada Hakkula Porata Samithi (LHPS) staged a demonstration demanding action against Rajya Sabha member Renuka Chowdary in connection with a complaint filed by Bukya Kalavathi, a tribal woman, under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act in March this year.
The protesters, including Kalavathi, the wife of late Ramji Naik of the town, staged a relay hunger strike at the Dharna Chowk near the Collectorate to press for their demands.
The LHPS organised the protest coinciding with the visit of senior Congress leader Ms. Renuka Chowdary to the town on Sunday.
Addressing the dharna, Kalavathi alleged that her husband was duped by the senior Congress leader on the false promise of securing him a party ticket from the Wyra ST reserved Assembly constituency in the last general elections.
She reiterated that she would continue the agitation until justice was done to her.
Some of the protesters squatted on the main road in a bid to block the convoy of Ms. Renuka Chowdary near the Collectorate.
Protesters detained
However, the police foiled their attempt and detained several protesters, including Ms Kalavathi.
Meanwhile, the Congress party cadres welcomed Ms. Renuka Chowdary on her arrival at Nayakangudem in Kusumanchi mandal on Sunday afternoon for a three-day visit. Ms. Renuka Chowdary’s supporters denounced the charges levelled against her by some organisations as ‘baseless’ and ‘politically motivated’.
