‘Mental illness should be treated at an early stage’

October 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:48 am IST - NIZAMABAD:

Increasing stress causes stuttering, behavioural problems and insomnia among students and they commit suicide unable to withstand it, said A. Vishal, Head of Department of Neuro Psychiatry at Government Medical College here.

Addressing the awareness camp organised for patients at the Government General Hospital in connection with World Psychiatric Day on Saturday, he said excessive dependence on drugs, which is almost an addiction, was making many youngsters end their lives even if they didn’t mean to. Many in villages were incurring financial loss and their condition, in terms of health, was not well too. If they suffer from diseases, they approach black magic practitioners than a doctor, risking their life. For psychiatric problems, proper treatment is a must at an early stage which will help patients recover well. More importantly, pregnant women should take nutritional food to avoid mental retardation and other psychiatric problems in babies. With regular exercise and meditation, mental stress can be overcome, he said. Dr. Vishal said everyone should make sure that leafy vegetables, fruits, eggs, fish and nuts constituted a sizeable portion of their daily diet.
