Lorries go off roads in Khammam

June 24, 2015 03:37 pm | Updated 03:37 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

Thousands of lorries went off the roads across Khammam District on Wednesday as part of the indefinite strike launched by the Telangana Lorry Owners Association from Tuesday midnight in pursuit of their charter of demands.

The movement of lorries, barring those transporting fuel, milk and other essential commodities, came to a halt all over the district on the first day of the strike.

A large number of lorries were parked on either side of the inter-State border in Aswaraopeta mandal, sources said.

The members of Khammam Lorry Owners Welfare Association staged a demonstration at Warangal crossroads here on Wednesday afternoon resenting “heavy tax burden” imposed on them, post-bifurcation.

Their main demands include reduction of quarterly tax, issue of counter-signature permits for operating services between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, among others.
