Kodandaram arrested, sent back to Hyderabad

Police and JAC activists jostling with each other in Biknoor of Kamareddy district on Friday.

T-JAC chairman Professor M. Kodandaram on his two-day Amarula Spoorthi Yatra [martyrs inspiration tour] was prevented by TRS activists from entering the district at Baswapur on NH-44 and later at Biknoor mandal headquarters.

The police on Friday denied permission for the rally in the district and took Prof Kodandaram into preventive custody and sent him back to Hyderabad with a huge convoy of police jeeps in the evening.

Earlier, TRS activists held rasta rokos to prevent Prof Kodandaram and JAC functionaries from entering the erstwhile Nizamabad district.

At least five T-JAC activists including students suffered injuries as TRS workers vandalized their camp at municipal office here.

The T-JAC district chairman I. Gopala Swamy alleged that TRS activists at the behest of party local leader Nittu Venugopal Rao assaulted the JAC members at the camp, uprooted marquee and broke chairs.

They also vandalized the tent by throwing stones and eggs. Tension prevailed right from the morning at Baswapur, native village of the Kamareddy MLA and government Whip Gampa Govardhan, as TRS activists blocked the roads to prevent Kodandaram and his entourage travelling in 50 cars and several motorbikes from entering the district. At the outset, Deputy Superintendent of Police Prasanna Rani objected to their yatra, but allowed them to proceed when they showed the permission. However, police took them into preventive custody at Biknoor saying that they could not conduct the rally amid the charged atmosphere even if they had clearance.

Prof. Kodandaram termed the police action of preventing the Amarula Spoorthi Yatra as most “undemocratic” and “barbaric” and said the government and the police had no right to say that he should not participate in the yatra.

“It is very ridiculous. The yatra is intended to protect democratic values and remind the government that it was going in the wrong direction, forgetting the very inspiration of the Telangana movement, expectations of people and aspirations of martyrs. We will not stop our journey. The TRS leadership is acting against the very purpose of Telangana agitation” Prof. Kodandaram told mediapersons after his arrest at Biknoor.
