Kilimanjaro beckons Telangana teen

Amgoth Tukaram, a 19-year-old mountaineer from Thakkelapally tanda in Yacharam village of Ranga Reddy district, is readying for “the biggest challenge” of his life. Starting June 27, he will embark on a fortnight-long arduous journey of scaling Mt. Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mt. Nun Kun (Kashmir).

“The urge to be someone special in a field which not many will venture into is the reason for me to take up adventure sports,” adds Tukaram, one of the three members of the Indian team (the other two being Deepak and Anand of Maharashtra) on this expedition.

His parents Amgoth Ramdas and Amgoth Jamku, who are small-time farmers, are not aware of his adventure, though. “My plans also include scaling Mt. Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe in September, and then Mt. Everest in March next year from the south route, which is the toughest with a high risk factor,” he tells The Hindu.

Referring to the preparations for the Mt. Everest journey, Tukaram says survival would be the biggest challenge. “The chances are 50-50. But, I am not scared and since not many have successfully completed this adventure, I want to be there as one of the youngest ever,” says the final year degree student of Noble College, Dilsukhnagar.

“Getting the award for the ‘best technique’ in basic courses and encouragement from NCC officials has spurred me to dream big and look to explore frontiers which many may fear to tread on,” says the soft-spoken but spirited teen.

The expenses for the whole ‘circuit’ would cost about ₹20 lakh and Tukaram feels once he successfully returns from Tanzania and Kashmir, he would get the ‘desired financial help’ from the corporate sector.

“Thanks to support by Sudhakar Rao sir (A. Sudhakar Rao, managing director of TSREDCO, Kolhapur) and Prabhakar sir (D. Prabhakar Rao, CMD of TSGENCO), I am getting this huge opportunity,” he signs off.
