October 15, 2014 01:22 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:11 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday ordered release of Rs. 105 crore for the survey of works pertaining to the drinking water grid and directed the officials concerned to take up all works simultaneously after completing the survey at the earliest.

He examined the primary report prepared by the officials on the drinking water grid at a review meeting held here with Deputy Chief Minister T. Rajaiah, Panchayat Raj Minister K.T. Rama Rao, Special Chief Secretary K. Pradeep Chandra (Industries), Principal Secretaries J. Raymond Peter (PR), V. Nagi Reddy (Finance), S. Narsing Rao (CMO), Advisor to Government K.V. Ramanachary and MP Balka Suman.

Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao said the drinking water grid was top priority to the State government as it was aimed at providing piped drinking water to every household. Water drawn from Srisailam, Nagarjunasagar, Jurala, Palair, Kinnerasani, Wyra, Ramappa, Lower Manair Dam, Mid Manair Dam, Kadem, Yellampally, Komaram Bheem, Gaddenna, Nizamasagar and Manjeera reservoirs would be given as drinking water to 25,000 habitations, he stated.

He asked the officials to prepare estimates on the different sizes of pipes out of the 1.32 lakh kilometre long pipelines required for the project and convince the pipe makers to manufacture them in Telangana itself to reduce the transportation cost. It would also help the State in creating some employment potential and the government would cooperate on setting of such units.

The Chief Minister suggested gravitational drawl or pumping of water from resources (projects) during the flood period and store such water elsewhere to overcome shortage of water later. A department would be created headed by a rank of Chief Engineer as quality would be given top priority in procurement of pipes, motors and other motors, he explained.

On the requirement of power for the project, the Chief Minister suggested preparation of proposals for sub stations near the intake points and filtering plants. The responsibility of maintaining summer storage tanks would be given to the Irrigation Department while the Rural Waster Supply Department take care of grid construction and maintenance.
