The historic Domakonda fort, spreading over 60 acres with several bungalows, is now surrounded by controversy, following a dispute among legal heirs. Consequently, the fort has been locked, barring entry to visitors.

The fort has over 400 years of history and the Kamineni dynasty ruled from within its walls for several centuries.

Archaeological Survey of India had taken over the protection of the compound wall and Mahadevuni temple, believed to have been built in the early Kakatiya period. The Asgar Manjil, Uma Manjil and Adhala Meda (glass palace) were left to the legal heirs in 2013.

Locals say the heirs reached an agreement over the ownership of palaces, binding to a condition that if the palaces need to be sold, the transaction must be held within them and not to outsiders.

However, heirs Satyanarayana, Rajeswar Rao and Lavanya allegedly violated the agreement, leading to conflict. They also locked the manjils.

Opposing this, Umapathi Rao, who is a retired IAS officer, lodged a complaint against in the local police station. Thereafter, Rajeswar Rao and his siblings also approached the police against Mr. Umapathi Rao and his son Anil Kumar.

The fort had hogged the limelight during the wedding of Upasana - Mr. Anil Kumar’s daughter - and movie star Ramcharan Teja.

The family often offers pooja at the Mahadevuni temple. The fort’s ground is also used to conduct charity and an archery training camp.Upon being approached by the clashing groups, District Collector N. Satyanarayana ordered District Panchayat Officer Ramulu to enquire into the issue.

Investigation launched

SI Vakiti Narender registered cases against 20 persons. An investigation has also been launched.

On the other hand, Mr. Umapathi Rao and Mr. Anil Kumar want to settle the issue to be settled internally. The locals are upset that the fort has been locked as it is a favourite destination of many.

However, locals also expressed hope that the issue would be solved amicably.
