Infosys has decided to double the headcount at its Hyderabad SEZ campus in Pocharam to 40,000 and also evaluate prospects of establishing a facility in Warangal.
Senior executives, including COO Pravin Rao, of the IT major mentioned plans at a World Environment Day programme organised on the campus on Friday.
A peek into their proposals came in the backdrop of Telangana IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao, who addressed the event, making a strong case for Infosys to expand operations in Hyderabad – it has campuses in Pocharam and Gachibowli – and evaluate Warangal for setting up a development centre.
Mr. Pravin Rao assured the Warangal plan will be given “serious consideration”. The company preferred tier-II locations, such as Warangal, so long as they had the eco-system to establish and support operations, especially talent.
A couple of other Infosys executives who spoke at the event said the headcount at Pocharam campus, which was set up eight years ago, is over 20,000 and the plan is to take it to 40,000. They, however, did not put a timeline within which that would be done.
Work on the second phase of the campus, an executive said, had been completed and it could accommodate 15,000-20,000 more people.
Assuring the firm of the government’s resolve to address infrastructural issues, the Minister said the government is implementing a Warangal-Hyderabad industrial corridor project.
Tech Mahindra and Cyient were among companies that either have or are setting up operations in Warangal, he said.
Urging Infosys to expand operations in Hyderabad, Mr. Rama Rao said 40% of the Infosys workforce in Bengaluru was from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and many of them would prefer to work in Hyderabad and Warangal.
