Several proposals for setting up industrial units in the district remain on paper, thanks to opposition from local residents. Both the government and industrial bodies fear Srikakulam will be ‘black-listed’ if the trend continues.
Skyrocketing of land prices, non-availability of skilled labour and opposition from locals to new projects have forced the Industries Department to approach the government for creation of an industry-friendly atmosphere in the district.
According to officials, more than 4 lakh people, out of a population of 25 lakh, migrated from the district in search of opportunities. Incidentally, the Industries Department has received as many as 43 applications for setting up major industries at an estimated investment of Rs.17, 709 crore. It has also received applications for 1,936 small and medium industries.
Land acquisition
A major hurdle to industrial growth in the district is land acquisition. The Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has set up industrial zones in Srikakulam, Palasa and Tekkali, but there is no space for new entrepreneurs.
“Several entrepreneurs show interest initially, thanks to the availability of raw materials for setting up power projects and jute and granite. But, most of them are uncertain about the execution of projects despite government agencies giving them the necessary clearances,” a senior official said.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Federation urged public representatives to prevail upon locals to cooperate with initiatives on the industrial front.
“There is no better time than now to take measures to develop Srikakulam. It is possible only when locals welcome entrepreneurs. Industrial units can spur economic activity and create employment. People also need not migrate to far-away places and face troubles,” said G. Sambasiva Rao, vice-president of the Federation.
