His penchant for education made the thirteen-year-old Ramesh take the bold step of approaching the police to get himself released from the clutches of labour. The incident took place at at Chiragpally on Saturday. Ramesh is a native of Dhanasiri village in Jarsangam mandal and studied up to class 5.
Cattle grazer
Despite his aptitude for education he was made to work as a cattle grazer and did odd jobs at his employer’s place.
His parents- Chellappa and Lakshmi - reportedly sent him to work with a landlord for Rs. 30,000 a year.
This has been going on for the past one year and as he was supposed to continue for the second year too, Ramesh got agitated and approached the police of Chiragpally some time back.
However he was unable to give clear picture to the police with complete information.
A determined Ramesh approached the Chiragpally police again on Friday and met Sub-Inspector S Vijaya Kumar and poured out his story. He told Mr. Kumar that he wanted to continue his education.
The Inspector asked Ramesh to come again on Saturday while he contacted Kohir mandal revenue officer (MRO) D. Anjaiah and told him to deal with the case.
On Saturday, Ramesh approached the police and by that time Mr. Anjaiah also arrived at the police station. He found out the details and promised Ramesh that he would see that he continued his education.
“I want to study. That is why I approached the police and brought my problem to their notice. They have promised to get me admitted in school again. I am happy that I would be going to school like my other friends,” Ramesh told The Hindu .
Financial assistance
“Ramesh has passion for education. We have decided to extend all our cooperation, including financial, to him,” said Mr. Vijaya Kumar.
