A six-year-old girl, Sai Manvitha, was allegedly set afire by one Aduri Narasamma (40), at Shanti Nagar Colony in Suryapet on Wednesday night.

According to police, the girl had gone to her aunt Saidamm’s place for summer holidays. She went to watch TV at her aunt’s tenant’s house when Narasamma allegedly set the girl on fire.

Locals said that Saidamm and her tenant Narasamma had some differences that might have motivated the latter to commit the crime. Meanwhile, Narasamma’s kin told the police that she was mentally ill.

The girl, who sustained 40 per cent burn injuries, was shifted to Suryapet area hospital and was later taken to a private hospital in Hyderabad following doctors’ advice. Her condition is stated to be stable.
