Sravan Kumar, the headmaster at the Government High School located near the old jail in the district headquarters, had called plumber for five times in one year for small repairs for running water system.

Some unidentified persons were entering the school and taking away the taps, besides, cutting the pipelines and sometimes damaging the property turning it useless. This is an old school in the town surrounded by many colonies.

At least, two water tanks, each having 200 litres capacity, were stolen from the school after the working hours in the last summer. Now, the tank was fitted with cement and teachers say that presently it was intact.

However, in the recent past, the locks of two rooms were broken by miscreants.T

Though a compound wall was constructed, the gate was never locked as community water tank was located on the premises, which was used by the public every day. As a result, the premise was being used by others for sports and other activities in the evenings.

This is not an isolated case. During last month, near Rajanelli, two quintals of rice was stolen from a school in Kohir mandal and the cost of rice was estimated at about Rs. 1,200, as the rice was not of fine quality.

There are several incidents that took place across the district, but never taken much seriously at the district level as the school headmaster formally lodges a complaint with the local police station.

“Breaking of classroom doors and using them for anti-social activities is very common and some of the headmasters do not lock at least a room intentionally so that the locks of other rooms were not broken.

“There are incidents where people defecate in classrooms,” said a teacher from Zaheerabad.

“We know that several such incidents are taking place in many schools, but we are not maintaining any register. The headmasters deal the issue locally,” said a senior officer at the DEO office.
