Government plans to spend ₹4,000 crore on 2BHK scheme this fiscal

₹185 crore allocated in this year’s budget, says Minister

The State government has targeted to spend over ₹4,000 crore during the current financial year for speedy completion of the prestigious two bedroom housing scheme.

Accordingly, it is planned to raise ₹2,500 crore as loan from the HUDCO and the government is expecting release of another ₹1,365 crore under Central schemes while it has allocated ₹185 crore for the scheme in the budget this year. Housing Minister Vemula Prashanth Reddy told the Legislative Assembly on Monday that the government had so far incurred ₹6,972 crore towards construction of the two bedroom houses in different parts of the State, including the massive complex of 17,000 houses coming up at Kollur on the city outskirts.

The project was started with an outlay of over ₹18,000 crore envisaging construction of 2.82 lakh 2BHK houses of which tenders were called for two lakh houses. Construction works relating to 1.8 lakh houses commenced and over 30,000 houses were now ready for occupation.

Nearly complete

More than 90 % work on another 90,000 houses were completed and the government targeted to complete major chunk of work before the end of the current fiscal.

“Construction by all the private builders put together during the last three years is around six lakh sq.ft area in the GHMC jurisdiction while the prestigious two bedroom housing scheme alone saw constructed area of around seven lakh sq.ft,” he said. The Minister said the scheme had become one of the instruments that contributed to rise in the State GDP as it provided employment for 50,000 workers in the urban areas and 25,000 in the rural areas every year since since its launch.

Allied industries

The scheme had ensured development of allied industries including the cement, bricks, steel and other components and the government had ensured transparency in the selection of the beneficiaries.

The Legislative Assembly passed the demand for grants related to housing, welfare and women development and child welfare departments during the discussion, which lasted more than five hours.
