The fruits of Mission Bhagiratha will soon be enjoyed by the residents of Gajwel as they are expected to receive Godavari waters in about two days. The water that reached Gajwel on March 3 was tested for quality on Tuesday and it would be supplied to all the households in the town and to 20 habitations surrounding the town soon.

The in-take well was constructed at Marmur in Adilabad district near Yellampally. Starting from Yellampally, the Godavari water travelled for about 180 km touching Komatibanda in Gajwel mandal of Medak district.

The water is being pumped to the height of 615 metres at Komatibanda whereas the base level at Ellampally is only 100 metres. Heavy pumps are being used to lift water at four stages, including 121 metres lift at Peddapally, 131 metres at Mallaram, 131 metres at Kondapaka and 120 metres at Ghanapur under Mission Bhagiratha.

The State government has proposed to supply drinking water to all the households in Gajwel, Dubbak and Siddiept constituencies in the first phase of Mission Bhagiratha. As some of the old pipelines are in a bad condition, new ones are being laid for about 2,000 km in these three constituencies.

The project was initiated by Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to meet the drinking water needs of Hyderabad and a part of that water is being diverted to meet the requirements of these three constituencies. About 15 million gallons of water per day would be used by the scheme once it begins next month. “The water was already tested and we will begin supplying it in the next two days covering about 70,000 population at Gajwel and other 20 habitations,” Vijay Prakash, Superintending Engineer, Mission Bhagiratha, told The Hindu .
