A team of five persons from Telangana State Disaster Response and Fire Services department on Sunday rescued a four-year-old girl who slipped into a 12-foot-deep nala through a hole in front of the Gowliguda gurudwara. Fireman B Kranthi Kumar, who got down into the nala, said the girl, Divya Chary, could be saved because she was caught in the garbage which was washed into the nala following Saturday’s rain. Otherwise, she might have been washed away.

Divya was walking on the road when she slipped into the hole around 10 a.m. Gowliguda Fire Station is located in the lane adjacent to the spot. Fireman Kranthi, who was posted on sentry duty, said he was guarding the station when a person alerted him about the incident.

Fire personnel rushed to the spot with the ladder and ropes. However, they faced a challenge after reaching the spot: adults would not fit into the hole.

“To find a way into the nala, we removed the cover of a manhole which was a few feet away. We did not opt for widening the opening by breaking the slab on the nala, as concrete pieces could fall on the girl and cause her injuries. I tied a rope, and climbed down the ladder,” said Mr Kranthi, adding the rescue was team work.
