Farmers’ suicide: kin get compensation

Endowment Minister A. Indrakaran Reddy on Monday handed over a cheque for Rs.1 lakh as compensation to Bonla Vasantha, widow of tenant farmer Linganna of Laxmanchanda mandal headquarters, who committed suicide a few months ago owing to crop failure and debts.

The family of Linganna is among the five other families to be visited by the All India Congress Committee vice-president Rahul Gandhi when he comes to the area for his ‘Rythu Bharosa Padayatra’ on May 15.

The claim for compensation was taken up by the revenue authorities after the padayatra of Mr. Rahul Gandhi was announced and it was processed in a quick time.

On Sunday, Mr. Indrakaran Reddy handed over Rs.10,000 from personal funds to the widow of farmer Velma Rajeshwar at Kortikal, also a family to be called on by the AICC vice-president.
