Farmers block road seeking irrigation water in Khammam

Farmers - mainly sugarcane growers - staged a road blockade at Palair in Kusumanchi mandal on Thursday demanding immediate release of water from the Palair balancing reservoir to the old channel for saving their standing crops.

Aggrieved farmers from several villages took to the streets as part of their desperate attempt to salvage their standing crops. They squatted on the main road near the Palair old channel in pursuit of their demand.

The agitated farmers demanded that the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) officials concerned should come to their rescue to protect their standing crops from withering.

They alleged that the NSP local officials were expressing their helplessness citing the low water level in the reservoir. They raised slogans seeking the intervention of the higher ups to help them save their crops.

Vehicular movement on the Khammam-Suryapet main road came to a standstill for some time. Scores of vehicles including that of a TRS MLA got stuck in the traffic jam for nearly half an hour, sources said.

The agitated farmers relented following the intervention of the mandal officials concerned who assured them of apprising the higher authorities of the farmers’ grievances.
