The police have arrested a medical practitioner R. Srinivas and registered a case under Preventive Detention (PD) Act for resorting to sex determination tests and carrying out abortions.

The police seized the scanning machines and sealed Swetha Nursing Home on Tuesday. The doctor was running illegal scanning centre and operation theatre exploiting the innocent tribals.

After a well laid out trap, the police shifted tribal women Bhanot Swathi, Azmira Sunitha, Chanda Lasya Priya and Guguloth Sarada who got abortions done after the sex determination tests to Government area hospital.

A case was registered against Srinivas in 2013 but he again resorted to his old practices. He holds BAMS certificate and started medical practice in the district.

Superintendent of Police Koti Reddy said that there were 18 scanning centres permitted but 30 of them were in operation. “We will conduct raids and ensure closure of all illegal scanning centres,” he said adding that the certificates of the arrested doctor were confiscated by the district medical department officials and he would be banned from practicing again.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Raja Mahendra Naik, special branch inspector Srinivas Raj, Deputy DM&HO Venkataramana were also present.
