The leaders of Congress and those from TRS and BJP continued to indulge in a war of words over the issue of farmers’ welfare, even a day after AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s visit to a few remote villages in Adilabad district to console some families of farmers who have committed suicide due to burden of debt.
Congress MP V. Hanumantha Rao and AICC official spokesperson Madhu Yaskhi Goud reiterated on Saturday that Mr. Gandhi’s visit was aimed at waking up the TRS Government and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on the issue of farmers’ plight.
Speaking in Nizamabad, Mr. Madhu Yashki sought to know why the government was not coming to the rescue of farmers when the Chief Minister was repeatedly claiming that Telangana was a rich State.
Taking dig at both Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao and BJP leaders, he said they did not even visit the farmers’ families that were in dire straits following loss in farming. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was always in flight mode and neither the Prime Minister nor any of his Cabinet colleagues had time to console the bereaved families of farmers.
In Hyderabad, Mr. Hanumantha Rao said the TRS leaders must know that their party had come to power only because of Sonia Gandhi’s decision to accord statehood to Telangana.
Meanwhile, Telangana Ministers Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and Tummala Nageswara Rao rebutted allegations of Mr. Gandhi and other Congress leaders against the TRS Government and suggested them to introspect in whose regime the country and the State had witnessed highest number of farmers’ suicides. They blamed the Congress policies for driving the farmers to suicides.
The Minister highlighted how the TRS Government was implementing the farm loan waiver for Rs. 17,500 crore and it had cleared the input subsidy dues of over Rs. 500 crore pertaining to 2009-14 period, when the Congress was in power.
On the other hand, BJP national general secretary P. Muralidhar Rao said the AICC vice president had no moral right to criticise the NDA Government.
Speaking in Warangal, he reminded Mr. Gandhi that it was Congress that was responsible for suicides of over three-lakh farmers during its 10-year rule from 2004 to 2014.
“Vidarbha and Telangana have turned into graveyards with suicides of farmers in large numbers during the Congress rule. Instead of taking up Kisan Sandesh Yatra, Mr. Gandhi should tour villages seeking apology from farmers for his party’s misdeeds,” the BJP leader suggested.
He claimed that BJP-ruled States had registered growth in agricultural sector.
