Congress sharpens its attack on EVMs

Demands counting of VVPAT votes

Congress continued its attack on the alleged misuse of electronic voting machine in the recent elections and questioned as to why the Election Commission is silent on its demand on counting of VVPATs.

Even after 40 days of our request the election authorities are silent on the issue and that is why the party had to move the court seeking justice, TPCC spokesperson Addanki Dayakar said at a press conference here on Wednesday.

Mr. Dayakar, who lost narrowly from Tungaturthi constituency, said that they filed petition in the court as such petitions have to be filed within 45 days of the elections and hoped that Election Commission at least now will respond.

He feared that with the pressure growing there is a possibility of manipulation of the VVPATs and EVMs to destroy the evidence.

He alleged that there was no information given to the party when new EVMs were used and the officials instead of storing the EVMs in a strong room had shifted them to some private places. They were shifted to the Strong Rooms only after 12 hours after the polling process ended.

Mr. Dayakar also alleged that 22 lakh voters were denied their votes and Chief Electoral Officer Rajat Kumat has simply apologised after the elections for the missing votes without explaining why such discrepancies were not stopped despite repeated representations from the Congress party.

He said Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao was abusing the Congress when it raised the serious issue of EVM manipulation but the party will continue its fight. He also said the party will take Parliament elections seriously and he was ready to contest from wherever the party suggests.

Tributes to Mahatma

The death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was observed and rich tributes were paid to him at various programmes organised by the party. TPCC president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, CLP leader Bhatti Vikramarka and senior leaders including Anjan Kumar Yadav, Mallu Ravi, Kumar Rao and others paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at the Gandhi Bhavan.

Speaking after paying tributes Mr. Mallu Ravi said party workers should rededicate themselves to throw out the ‘undemocratic’ rule of the NDA led by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi as the Mahatma did to throw out the British rule.
