State government criticised for okaying the poor quality works

Congress MLC T. Jeevan Reddy has demanded that the State government order a judicial inquiry into the irregularities and poor quality construction of the Mid Manair Dam (MMD) reservoir in Boinpalli mandal in Rajanna-Sircilla district.

The Congress team on Sunday visited the MMD project and inspected the leakages which developed after the reservoir was filled with 15 TMCs of water forcing the authorities to open all the flood gates to release water downstream into the LMD reservoir last month to avoid breach of the MMD.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Jeevan Reddy said that the government should order inquiry and punish the culprits for the poor quality works and for posing safety threat to the reservoir. The culprits should be punished, whether they are engineers, contractors or anyone, he said criticised the State government for constructing a ring bund as temporary measure to save from the leakages and breach. He said that the government should reconstruct the reservoir earth dam to avoid further leakages and possible breaches.

Alleging that the engineers executing the MMD reservoir were responsible for the leakages, he asked what the quality control officials had done and why they made payments to the constructor without checking the quality of works. He also demanded that the government declare Manwada and Kandikatkur villages as submerged and provide compensation as per norms.

On public request

TPCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar said that they had visited the dam site only following a request by the villagers to ensure safety of the reservoir. “We are not here to do politics. We came only to tell the government to ensure the safety of the project and avoid leakages and possible breaches,” he maintained.

Stating that the MMD reservoir was the ‘heart’ of Kaleshwaram project, he said that there was a hole in the heart and the government should rectify it. Congress leaders Medipally Satyam, Adi Srinivas and others were also present.
