Congress calls for CBI probe

June 11, 2015 11:26 am | Updated 11:26 am IST - HYDERABAD:

Telangana Congress party on Wednesday made a forceful pitch for a CBI probe into the rampant defections and corruption in the recent Legislative Council elections.

Deputy leader of Telangana Congress Legislature Party T. Jeevan Reddy, in a letter to President Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday said there was rapid deterioration of constitutional values and adherence to Constitution in Telangana. “It calls for a thorough enquiry. The Speaker’s inaction and Governor’s failure in protecting the Constitution has turned Telangana State into a fertile ground for unconstitutional defections with all kinds of acts of bribery from all sides. Only a high-level enquiry by CBI will unearth the dubious acts of defections and corruption,” he said in the letter.

Mr. Reddy lamented that the political situation in the State touched a new low. He also hit out at the Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao saying that the latter has been at the game of defections from other parties for the last one year.

Despite absolute majority in the Assembly, he encouraged defections and the result of the Council elections only proved that. Against 63 members, his party got 85 votes, he asked.

Rajya Sabha member V. Hanumantha Rao reiterated his allegations at a press conference that the AP Chief Minister had allegedly masterminded the cash-for-vote scam. Mr. Rao said only a CBI probe will bring the facts out.

He dared Mr. Naidu to clarify that he had not spoken to the nominated MLA. The Rajya Sabha member faulted AP Government’s decision to ask the AP police to provide security to Mr. Naidu. “It is a known fact that in the last one year, not even a single major incident had taken place in Telangana.
