‘Centre should come out with urban policy soon’

India has the second largest urban population and it is time that the Centre came out with an urban policy to meet future challenges, observed Prof. D. Ravindra Prasad of Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI).

Delivering the 12th endowment lecture in memory of late Prof. P. A. James at Kakatiya University here on Wednesday, Prof. Prasad said a sound urban policy would be a guide for systematic development of growing towns and cities.

Empowering local bodies

Implementation of 74th Constitutional Amendment providing empowerment to the local bodies, need for modern decision making architecture, redesigning institutions to administer the present and emerging urban challenges, revamping human resources to bring professionalism into urban governance, conferring autonomy and freedom on cities to address specific problems are some of the measures to be taken in this direction to address the urban challenges, he pointed out.

“We have largest urban population followed by China. We need to come out with a proper policy for sound development of urban areas,” Prof Prasad opined. In-charge Registrar Prof. Khaja Althaf Hussain, Prof. M. Kistaiah, Prof. T. Satyanarayana, Dr. T.V. Sujatha Kumari, Samuel Sudhakar were among those present.
