: Budding roller skaters endowed with boundless enthusiasm for skating, yearn for a full-fledged skating rink in the town to explore their skating skills to the hilt. At the crack of the dawn and late in the evening, children and youngsters flock to the skating rink of just 35 metres length at the Sardar Patel Stadium in Khammam to participate in the skating training camp each day.

But the small skating rink constructed over a decade ago appears to be no match for the intensity of the skaters’ zeal to master the action-packed skills required. Nevertheless, the skating enthusiasts including a host of budding skaters continue to pursue their favourite sport despite the lack of the necessary sports infrastructure.

The district has produced several talented skaters who have brought laurels to Khammam by virtue of their meritorious performance in several State and National level skating events, says Suresh, who imparts training to children and youth at the Sardar Patel Stadium. A spacious skating rink of 200 metres length is imperative to impart training in various advanced skating techniques, he emphasises. Several budding skaters such as Mounika Sruthi, have secured admissions in higher education courses including professional and technical courses, under the sports quota. The existing facility at the stadium should be upgraded to enable budding skaters of the district to unravel their talents and excel in the fascinating game, suggests Mounika, a third year MBBS student of a private medical college in the Ranga Reddy district.

I owe a lot to the game as it fetched me an MBBS seat in a reputed medical college under the sports quota, says Mounika, who won a host of medals including a silver medal at the National level skating championship in the past.
