Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) raided a packaged drinking water manufacturing unit - Shiva Ganga Mineral Water plant - located at Peerzadiguda in Ghatkesar mandal of Ranga Reddy district as it was using a fake licence number for the ‘ISI’ mark.

A large number of 20-litre pet bottles filled with packaged drinking water with the fake licence number and brand name ‘Fosters’ with spurious BIS standard mark were seized during the raid, said Hyderabad BIS head Ameer-uz-Zaman, in a press release.

Action is being initiated against the offenders under the BIS Act 2016 and the offence is punishable by imposing maximum amount of fine up to ₹5 lakh or two years imprisonment or both under section 29 of the Act. He also explained that manufacture, sale, storage and exhibition for sale of packaged drinking water without valid licence from BIS and use of ‘ISI’ standard mark illegally are punishable under law. BIS licence is given to the manufacturing units only after thorough scrutiny of the unit and testing facility, besides hygiene. Consumption of uncertified packaged drinking water is unsafe and maybe harmful to health, he said.

Mr. Zaman also urged the general public to provide information on misuse of the ‘ISI’ mark and those manufacturing packaged drinking water without ‘ISI’ licence to be brought to the office’s notice at Industrial Development Park in Moula Ali or contact them by dialling 27243339, 27249993, 27249996, 27249998 or via the mail ID hbo@bis.gov.in, a press release said.
