The officials of Airports Authority of India interacting with Collector Sridevasena and other district officials about the proposal for airport at existing airstrip at Basantnagar in Peddapalli district recently.

The proposal for an airport in the industrial town of Godavarikhani in Peddapalli district is unlikely to take shape soon in view of the obstacles to the flight path at the existing airstrip at Basantnagar in Palakurthi mandal.

Following the proposal by the State government to set up airports in Peddapalli, Warangal, Adilabad, Nizamabad, Mahabubnagar and Kothagudem districts, a team of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) officials visited the Basantnagar airstrip on Thursday to inspect the existing airstrip at Kesoram Cement Factory in Basantnagar.

Official sources said that the AAI team had assured that they would prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the construction of airport in the existing site. However, they had raised several queries. The AAI officials pointed out to the district administration that the Bodagutta hillock in Kannala village and the high-tension wires of NTPC Ramagundam, which supply power to entire South India, were likely to disrupt the flight path of landing aircraft.

Runway expansion

As per the safety measures stipulated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), the existing runway was very short and it had to be expanded to 1800 m or 2,000 m. For which, the revenue authorities would have to acquire an additional 200 to 400 acres of land. Land acquisition would be a difficult task as the required land was not government land and there was industrial corridor in the vicinity.

The existing airstrip of the Kesoram Cements was spread over 294 acres and was used by the founders of the cement factory. In the 1980s, Vayudoot service operated from the airstrip. The proposal for the construction of an airport in the region was pending with the government since 2004.

High demand

The revenue sources said that they had briefed the AAI delegation about the importance of an airport in the region in view of the existence of many important industrial units in the district, including NTPC, Singareni Collieries, and Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited, among other industries.

“We had informed the AAI about the feasibility of the airport and its usage by the locals,” they stated.

However, the AAI team is reported to have raised queries about the proposed airport meeting the DGCA safety norms, like expansion of runway and obstructions to the flight path.
