The Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Committee has asked the State government to immediately convene a review meeting on arrangements for the coming Ganesh festivities in the city.

The 11-day festival will be held from August 29 to September 8.

Speaking at a press conference here on Monday, the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Committee general secretary Bhaghwath Rao said every year the government conducts a meeting with representatives of the committee. It was chaired by the Chief Minister, and other Ministers and officials concerned attend it.

“Although this is the first Ganesh festival in the Telangana State, the government had not bothered to hold a review meeting till now with the representatives,” Mr. Rao said.

The committee also criticised the police for raising environmental issues in regard to the festival. “The job of the police is to maintain law and order and it should focus on it,” he said.

Taking a dig at the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) for raking up water pollution issues before every Ganesh festival, Mr. Rao said that the civil society organisations are supported by a few Christian missionaries, who do not want the Hindu cultural to flourish. “The NGO’s are busy making money in the name of creating awareness to prevent pollution,” Mr. Rao alleged.

The Ganesh Utsav Committee has asked people to create awareness on the importance of cow in the eco-system. Youngsters should take the lead by going to every house and explaining about the need for protection of cow, it added.
