Water was released from Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) in Nalgonda district into the left canal on Sunday to replenish the Palair balancing reservoir in Kusumanchi mandal in the district in view of the abysmally low water level in the reservoir. Sources said that 500 cusecs of water was released into the NSP left canal late in the afternoon, keeping in view the consistent pleas made by various political parties and farmers’ organisations to fill up the reservoir. The move was necessitated by the drastic fall in the water level in the Palair reservoir below 10 feet against the full reservoir level of 23 feet.
The Palair reservoir is the major source of drinking water to Khammam town and the lifeline of thousands of farmers in the district.
