Instead of just pruning the branches of trees, municipal workers chopped off half-a-dozen trees at Vidyanagar Colony in Nalgonda district to pave way for the procession of a massive Ganesh idol here on Sunday morning.

Actually, they had planned to cut down more trees, but the civic staff withdrew it following the strong objection from local residents .

Srinivas, a local, said that the civic authorities should have just removed the branches of these well-grown trees to widen the way, but the workers went on cutting down the seven-year-old trees due lack of supervision from officials.

“What is the meaning of cutting the trunk of trees to half?” he questioned.

Another citizen, K. Srirami Reddy, said the chances of survival of these trees are bleak.

“The trees would not even grow in proper way even if they survive,” he observed. Residents of the colony said while the State government and the district administration have been talking about improving greenery, the municipal staff did the opposite. They sought action against the erring staff besides urging the municipal administration to take up plantation of more saplings.

They also appealed to the civic authorities to conduct awareness programmes for Ganesh pandal organisers prior to the installation of idols from next year to promote use of moderate-size environment-friendly idols.
