The students of Jyothishmathi Institute of Technology and Sciences (JITS) have formed a group called “Jyothishmathi brigade” to fight the social evils in the society.

The Jyothishmathi Brigade would be actively participating in the Swachh Karimnagar programme to clean the district from filth and also crusade against the ragging, eve-teasing, use of plastic etc.

Superintendent of Police D Joel Davis formally launched the Jyothishmathi Brigade on Wednesday by presenting a ‘sash’ to the students, who had enrolled in the team for participating in the social movement. College principal AR Naseer had administered the oath among the Brigade members about their mission to serve the mankind and participate in various social service programmes.

Appreciating the initiative of the student community, the SP informed the Brigade to adopt at least one village in the district and take up developmental programmes. Appealing the students to visit the interior and backward villages of the district, he called upon the students to educate the rural folk about health and medicare, cleanliness, nutrition, environment and other important matters. Lauding the objectives of the Brigade to serve the nation, he said that the college management had perfectly channelized the positive energy of the student community and help in developing the leadership qualities. He also empowered the students to launch several social awareness programmes on various evils in the society.

Elaborating on the ill-effects of ragging he informed the students to discourage the evil practice of ragging. He informed the students to focus on their career and uphold the image of their educational institutions and fellow students. JITS chairman J Sagar Rao said that there was overwhelming response to the Jyothishmathi Brigade with the enrolment of more than 800 students to take part in various community service programmes. He said that they would be participating in various social awareness programmes at least once in a fortnight and contributes their might for the society.

On this occasion, the SP planted a sapling and called upon the students to take up plantation and its protection. Later, the brigade members actively participated in the Swachh campus programmes by removing garbage, shrubs and cleanliness of the premises.
