Warangal roads turn perilous

Only one contractor came forward to carry out repairs, but backed out: Mayor

February 16, 2017 01:28 am | Updated 08:33 am IST - WARANGAL URBAN:

Contrary to the claims by ruling party members and officials, the roads in the city have turned perilous.

The stretch of main road around Hanamkonda Bus Station, which is busiest, has become life-threatening with deep potholes and lies unattended to for months now. Surprisingly the public representatives and officials, who pass this way, have turned a blind eye to the problem.

Noted paediatrician Maganti Seshu Madhav said the road around bus stand was pathetic and wonder why it was not repaired for a long time. Another children specialist Pingali Gopal said however careful one was during driving, the road poses risk to one’s health as there were big potholes and non-negotiable.

Ironically though the road was laid several times, it does not last even for a year and reasons were only best known to officials. The city roads are hardly attended to. There were no repairs and regular maintenance for a long time.

Speaking to The Hindu , city Mayor N. Narender said they had called for tenders and one contractor came forward to carry out the repairs, but backed out without assigning any reason. “We are trying to cancel that contract and call for fresh tenders. It will be done soon,” he said.

The road from Hanamkonda Bus Station toward Balasamudram is very dangerous with hardly any motorable stretch. The roads in Hanamkonda chowrastha are also not up to the mark.

Lok Satta advisor Parcha Kodandarama Rao said that though their volunteers brought to the notice of officials, they remain unattended to strangely. He favoured fixing of responsibility on officials for quality and durability of roads in all future endeavours. “The municipality black tops the roads and within few days, it gets washed away. It is back to square one again within months,” he lamented.

Those passing via Hanamkonda Bus Station rue gravely and curse the authorities for bad shape of road and their neglect.
