The 14-year-old drinking water supply scheme at Pedamidisileru village located on the Taliperu riverbed in Charla mandal has become defunct.

The 7.5 hp motor of the rural water supply scheme was washed away and the pipelines around the Taliperu reservoir site were severely damaged when all the 25 crest gates of the Taliperu dam were lifted to let out the huge volume of floodwater from the upstream areas in neighbouring Chhattisgarh a fortnight ago.

However, the scheme, originally designed to provide potable water to 11 habitations including several fluoride affected hamlets, is unlikely to be revived as the authorities have drawn up plans to shelve it and integrate it with Mission Bhagiratha water grid project, sources said.

Drinking water is being supplied to around 75 habitations including the 11 habitations, hitherto covered by the rural water supply scheme at Taliperu reservoir, from the water treatment plant at Parnashala constructed under the Dummugudem segment of the Mission Bhagiratha project, said N. Srinivas Rao, Deputy Executive Engineer, Mission Bhagiratha (Intra), Bhadrachalam.

Water is being supplied through public taps in the 11 habitations at present, he said, adding that plans were afoot to integrate the defunct rural water supply scheme with the Mission Bhagiratha and provide piped water supply to all households in the entire Charla mandal by October-end.
