‘Police threatened to encounter us’

Villagers of Vemulaghat and Erravalli who faced police brutality on Sunday share their experience

Talameni Lakshmi of Vemulaghat, one who has been singing songs against the Telangana government, shared her experience with police brutality when she was taking part in a protest demonstration on Sunday. “The police identified me and asked if I was the one singing songs against the government. They beat me up and I was even hit on my throat,” she said.

Many women from Vemulaghat who took part in the protest programme on Sunday had to face police brutality. “The police just went on beating us up without even sparing the aged and the children,” said Dasari Venkatamma, another woman who was part of the protest on Sunday.

A large number of women from Vemulghat are on a relay fast that entered 51st day on Monday, 24 hours after the police lathi-charge on them. Other protesters Aakaram Pedda Mallaiaha and Mazid from Erravalli said police beat them up badly and even threatened to encounter them. “We had only heard about the Nizam rule. We are now witnessing it,” they rued.
