Telangana reels under heavy rain

Five feared dead in downpour in Medak, Nizamabad and Nalgonda districts.

For the second consecutive day, several districts in Telangana continued to receive heavy rain resulting in major reservoirs getting heavy inflows and streams and rivulets in spate.

So far five deaths have been reported from Medak, Nizamabad and Nalgonda districts. Two persons reportedly died in separate incidents in Medak district. A fourteen-year-old boy Prashanth died after falling in a local stream at Aroorvagu in Sadashivapet mandal. In another incident, one Bhaskar died after falling in a pit near mandal office at Kondapaka.

A Nizamabad report said a car was swept away in flash floods and the two occupants of the vehicle are said to be missing. In Nalgonda, a boy was washed away in a local stream despite desperate efforts by villagers to save him.

Normal life continued to be affected badly in Warangal city, Medak, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Khammam and Adilabad district. Several colonies inWarangal are still under sheets of water with residents pleading with officials to clear the waterlogging.

The driver and cleaner of a lorry had a providential escape in Medak district when the heavy vehicle rammed into a bridge on Manjeera in Raipalli villageof Manoor mandal. As the tyre of the lorry got punctured, the vehicle swerved to the right and hit the railing and hanged precariously. The driver and cleaner were rescued by the police. Traffic came to a standstill at Mumbai national highway at Sangareddy for a stretch of two kilometres

In another incident in the same district, 25 migrant labourers from Odisha, who were working at a check dam in Edupayala village, were caught in swirling flood waters. Efforts are on to rescue them by the National Disaster Response Force team.

Heavy inflows into reservoirs

The Sriramsagar project across Godavari at Pochampad in Nizamabad was getting heavy inflows of 3.50 lakh cusecs forcing the authorities to release 6,658 cusecs.

In neighbouring Karimnagar district, 10 flood gates remained open to release 30, 993 causes of water at the Sripada Yellampalli project. The present storage is 19. 36 tmcs against its full capacity of 20. 175 tmcs.

River Manair was in spate in Karimnagar districrt as the Upper, Mid Manair reservoirs were to the brim. The surplus water was being released into the river and the Lower Manair Dam is expected to fill up anytime.

Following the release of floodwaters from Kadem project in Adilabad district, which would reach Sripada Yellampalli project by evening, the project officials said they would increase the outflow and maintain only 19. 36 tmcs

Singoor project on Manjeera is receiving one lakh cusecs of water as inflow and about 90,000 cusecs was being released into the river. Present water storage was 25.8 tmcft against the total capacity of 29.9 tmcft.

Kadem project in Adilabad saw sudden inflows prompting irrigation authorities to open 60,000 cusecs.

Musi almost full

In Nalgonda district, Musi project at Kethepalli was two feet short of the Full Reservoir Level of 645 feet. Nine crestgates were opened to let out the surplus water. The inflow into the project was 41,903 cusecs while the outflow was 34,360 cusecs.
