It was a different way to celebrate Gandhi Jayanthi this year, for over 100 youngsters who came together for tree walks organised by Nizhal, as part of The Hindu Young World 25 event, here.

The walks were conducted in Ramakrishna Children's Park, Tambaram, Nageswara Rao Park, Mylapore, Natesan Park, T.Nagar and Kotturpuram Tree Park. Participants not only learnt about the different trees but also about how to recognise those commonly found in the neighbourhood, their scientific names and their innumerable uses.

Shoba Menon, Founder, Nizhal, said the children were an inquisitive lot and it was heartening to see how eager they were. “The participants learnt a mix of things. The walk was not only a learning process for the children, but they were also exposed to activities. For instance, we gave them dried leaves and asked them to match them with the trees.” The group of youngsters vowed to contribute to the city’s green cover by planting more trees.

The participants received certificates. The gift partner was Soulfull. Members of the NGO, Nizhal, were the resource persons.
