Writers’ body seeks security to Perumal Murugan

The Tamilnadu Progressive Writers’ and Artists Association has urged the State and Union governments to provide adequate security to writer Perumal Murugan and his family.

In a resolution passed at the association’s district conference, it urged the governments to safeguard freedom of expression to creative writers in future.

The association condemned the move to honour Nathuram Godse. The State government should not accord permission for setting up the statue in Kanyakumari.

The association urged the government to fully implement Samacheer Kalvi scheme in Kanyakumari district and take appropriate action against matriculation schools which continue to follow matriculation syllabus. It sought inclusion of the life history of Ayya Vaikundasamy, who fought untouchability and castiest forces, in college and school curriculam.

The two-day conference began with the art exhibition on Saturday.

PT leader seeks probe

Chennai Special Correspondent writes:

Puthiya Tamizhagam leader K. Krishnasamy on Sunday demanded an inquiry by the sitting judge of the Madras High Court into the peace meeting held by the Namakkal district administration that extracted an apology from writer Perumal Murugan.

In a statement here, he said that what was organised in the name of peace meeting was nothing but a “kangaroo court” as demanding an apology was beyond the powers of the Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) and also amounted to curtailing the rights of a writer to express his views.

Dr. Krishnasamy said that even though the book was published four years ago, only the English translation of it had created the trouble for the writer, who had announced his decision to renounce writing. “A Delhi-based fundamentalist group had orchestrated the campaign against Mr. Perumal Murugan and his novel Madhorubhagan ,” he said.
