‘Work on statue to be over soon’

Chemical coating is on: Minister

The chemical coating work on the Tiruvalluvar statue will be over within the stipulated period of six months, said Minister for Tourism Vellamandi N. Natarajan here on Saturday.

Addressing journalists after inaugurating the five-day Kumari Fest – 2017 at St. Antony Higher Secondary School ground here, the Minister said that the work began in April and was being monitored by officials at regular intervals.

Chemical coating was done on the statue once in four years to protect it from the salty wind, he said.

He also said that preparation of estimate for the proposed bridge between Vivekanandar Rock Memorial and Tiruvalluvar statue was in the final stage.

Once the estimate was approved by the government, the work will start soon, he added.

A new conference hall to accommodate 1,000 persons will be built within the TTDC complex in Kanniyakumari, the Minister said.

The Kumari Fest – 2017 was organised by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation and the district administration.
