Work on golden car nearing completion

The work on the construction of a golden car at an outlay of Rs. 1.5 crore for the famous Arulmigu Thanthondreeswarar Temple in Belur village near Vazhappadi is nearing completion.The temple is one of the ancient temples constructed by Cholas kings. Situated on the bank of River Vasishtanadhi, the temple is considered to be the foremost important among the five elements of Universe (Panchabootha sthlams).

The temple has a serene atmosphere, surrounded by beautiful hillocks and is maintained by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments.

A group of local philanthropists raised donations for the construction of the golden car. The work which commenced two years ago is nearing completion.

The images of the car were carved out on copper plate as a preliminary measure. The work on the making of gold fibres is in progress at present in accordance with ‘agama’ rules. The Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchi, has designed the wheels of the car.

About three kg of gold has been used through electro-blasting method.

With the completion of the work, the car festival is expected to be held in the temple soon.
