Over thousand plantain trees were destroyed in the gusty winds that blew away the prospects of farmers in Gudiyatham and neighbouring places.

Though Vellore district is experiencing hot weather during daytime, evenings are cooler in some regions due to sudden spell of showers and sometimes gusty winds. For the past two days, Guidyatham and its neighbouring villages have been receiving intermittent rains.

Modikuppam, Valasai, Kottamitta, Synagunta, Keezhkollapalli received over 4 mm of rain with thunderstorms.

Due to this, several plantain trees ready for harvest were uprooted leaving farmers in the lurch. Each tree had more than 100 banana fruit. “All the hardwork we have put in has gone waste,” says a farmer from Tiruppattur town, who lost his crops in the rains last week.

Some of the coconut and mango trees also suffered extensive damage in the two days’ rain. Instead of waiting for orders from senior officials, the inspection staff should continue their routine work of assessing the damage at once to issue the necessary compensation, said another farmer from Valasai village.
