Wholesale price of egg on the rise

May 24, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - NAMAKKAL:

The wholesale price of egg is on the rise and stood at Rs. 3.25 on Saturday.

Officials at the National Egg Coordination Committee, Namakkal Zone, said that owing to increase in demand in North India and domestic market, the wholesale price of egg continues to be on the rise in the past two weeks. The price of an egg was Rs. 2.80 in the first week of May, Rs. 3.11 in the second week of May and Rs. 3.25 in the third week.

Average price

The average price of an egg for May stood at Rs. 3.06.

During the same day last year, the price of an egg was Rs. 3.05. Statistics shows that the average egg rate for January 2015 stood at Rs. 3.18, Rs. 2.72 for February, Rs. 2.61 for March and Rs. 2.61 for April, officials said.

Production

However, the daily egg production has dropped over the year from 3.15 crore eggs per day in January 2015 to 3.06 crore eggs per day in April 2015.

Officials are hopeful that the price of egg would further go up once the regular procurement of about 45 lakh eggs a day for nutritious noon meal scheme resumes from first week of June.

“The production is expected to increase in coming days,” they added.
