When veshti and Velcro form a welcome pair

Those who have always hesitated about wearing the outfit to public functions can now heave a sigh of relief; there is even a pocket

For people not adept in tying the veshti (dhoti) properly around their waist, there is some good news. The recently launched Velcro (the common fastener) veshtis is a boon to those who dread wearing them at functions or events.

Twitter has a number of posts welcoming Velcro in dhotis. Bhavani Giddu (@bgiddu) posted: ‘Methinks Dhoti with Velcro is the greatest #innovation of our times! #VelcroDhoti.’

Velcro in Dhotis seems a dream come true for those who have always wanted to flaunt them at functions but have been paranoid about not being able to wear it properly. On Twitter, Iyer & Satiyer (@ireandsatire) said ‘my dhoti tying skills are zero. So this would help I guess.’

S. Ramesh, managing director of Pothys, said the sale of Velcro Dhotis are picking up. “It is not only the younger crowd that is opting for this. Even senior citizens prefer them because it is easy to wear and comfortable.”

A pocket that comes along with it is an added bonus. A few years ago, there was a tweet about how someone wished dhotis came with a pocket after having lost his mobile phone. “What are you guys doing at the #Dhoti shop? Can’t you guys “invent” a Dhoti with pockets!” posted Brahmin Boy (@brahminboy).

Well, it’s here now.

Cycling lovers unite

The city might lack dedicated cycling lanes for enthusiasts to take it up as a sport or just stay in shape.

For those who take part in competitive events or wish to keep themselves fit or even others who love the outdoors, there are very few options where they can hit the road – East Coast Road for instance, which is fraught with hazards of overspeeding and rash driving.

However, cycling continues to attract fitness freaks in the city.

Actor Arya recently excelled in a global cycling event in Sweden and now, another young actor has associated himself with a group that aims to bring together cycling lovers in the city. CF Square, an ensemble of cycling and fitness enthusiasts in the city, was unveiled on Saturday.

Aimed at cultivating the cycling habit for a healthy life, the new cycle club has planned weekly trips and adventure rides for its members.

Launched by Actor Karthi at a city Just Buy Cycles outlet, the club is formed in association with the retail cycle store and Joyriders. According to its organisers, the initiative is for members to blend with fellow cyclists for fun-rides, endurance rides and also meet racers and professional bike technicians. Every member is guaranteed advice on nutrition for endurance, weight loss and also gaining strength.

Training modules for fitter and faster cycling will be provided and members will be guided to pick the right bike components and safety gear.
