What is a Smart City?

October 31, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST

There is no one idea of a Smart City. What Chandigarh wants will definitely differ from what Coimbatore desires. While each of the cities in the Smart City Mission can have its own wish list, there are core infrastructure elements that are listed that point towards sustainable and inclusive development.

The mission is to refurbish existing facilities and infrastructure so that it becomes a model city, that can be replicated by other cities in the country.

These are water, electricity, sanitation, public transport, affordable housing, good IT connectivity, good governance (especially e-governance and citizen participation), sustainable environment, security to vulnerable citizens, health and education. The cities are encouraged to add more if they so desire.

In Tamil Nadu, 12 cities have been selected, and Coimbatore is one of them.
