Honouring freedom fighters and distribution of welfare assistance marked the 72nd Independence Day celebrations in Karur and other districts on Wednesday.

In a well attended function held at the District Stadium here, Collector T. Anbalagan hoisted the flag. Accompanied by Superintendent of Police T.K. Rajasekaran, he inspected the ceremonial parade and accepted the guard of honour of Armed Reserve police personnel. Members of National Cadets Corps, National Service Scheme, Scout and Junior Red Cross participated in the march past.

Later, he honoured freedom fighters, who came from different parts of the district, with shawl. Besides presenting medals and certificates to the best performing officials of various departments including police and home guards personnel, he distributed welfare assistance to the tune of ₹6.60 crore to 150 beneficiaries.

Gram sabha meetings were held at 157 revenue villages on Wednesday. Collector Anbalagan participated in the meeting held at Thirukadurai.

Gaiety marked the celebrations in Pudukottai district with Collector S.Ganesh, accompanied by Superintendent of Police, S.Selvaraj, inspected the guard of honour after unfurling the flag.

Forty-one police personnel and 170 government services received commendation certificates. He recognised the contributions of freedom fighters by presenting them with khadi shawls and mementoes.

Sixty-three beneficiaries were handed over welfare assistance worth ₹7.28 lakhs. Over 800 students participated in the cultural pageant.

In Perambalur district, Collector V.Santha hoisted the tricolour and later accompanied by Superintendent of Police Disha Mittal, inspected the guard of honour presented by the police.

She presented certificates of appreciation to 16 police personnel, eight Home Guards and 16 government servants for commendable service.

Ms.Santha distributed welfare assistance worth ₹89.72 lakhs to 174 beneficiaries. M.Chandrakasi, MP, was present.

Later, she distributed welfare assistance to the tune of ₹52 lakh to 39 beneficiaries. She met freedom fighters and appreciated their service to the nation by honouring them with shawls.
