Like the Institute of Child Health and Hospital for Children, Egmore, the Department of Paediatrics of Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH) has set up a “Wall of Kindness” ( Anbu Suvar ) to receive contributions for children admitted to the hospital.

E. Theranirajan, head of department, Paediatrics, GVMCH, said the initiative was launched on Saturday with staff including doctors, nurses from a number of departments coming forward to contribute clothes for children. GVMCH dean R. Shantimalar launched the initiative at the department.

Similar facility

“Such a ‘wall of kindness’ was first started in Tirunelveli district. We wanted to set up a similar facility to cater to the needs of children admitted here. We have deputed a staff to manage the wardrobe and accept contributions. We have made it clear that no torn clothes should be contributed,” he said.

He added that sometimes, mothers, who admit their children to the hospital during late hours in emergency cases, do not carry additional clothes and are in need of clothes for them and the children.

“So far, people have donated clothes including new ones, bedsheets, towels and toys. They can also contribute stationery items such as pencils, notebooks for the children.

“We have asked the parents to select and take the required things from the wardrobe. It will be kept open,” he said.
