The vocational teachers all over the state will be observing a one-day fast near the Government Guest House in Chepauk in Chennai from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on October 31 in support of their long-pending demands.
According to a press release from S.N. Janardhanan and M. Rajaram, state conveners of the Tamil Nadu Federation of Higher Secondary School Vocational Teachers, the demands included computing the pension by taking into account the period during which the vocational teachers were on consolidated pay as per the various orders of the Madras High based on the government orders 131, 132 and 134 of the School Education Department.
Benefits
The teachers were demanding this benefit on par with the benefit enjoyed by the clerks in the Department of Rural Development and Village Panchayats (DRD) based on the G.O. No.408 dated August 25, 2009 of the DRD and G.O. No.38 dated June 13, 2011 of the same department.
These government orders provide for calculating the pension of the clerks in the Department of Rural Development and Village Panchayats by taking into account 50 per cent of the period during which they were on consolidated pay.
Promotional venues
The federation is also demanding promotional venues to the vocational teachers who have not been given any promotion for the last 30 years while junior teachers who have put in just 10 years of service have been given promotions.
This situation is causing a lot of mental agony to the teachers who have not been given promotion as headmasters even after 30 years of service in the absence of any proceedings governing their status.
The association demanded payment of selection grade `grade pay’ of Rs.5400 to such teachers as per existing government orders.
Long-pending demand
Another long-pending demand of the vocational teachers was payment of two incentives to the teachers who have acquired postgraduate qualification in subjects other than the subjects of their basic degree, as given to other categories of teachers.
