Virudhunagar loses top slot by a whisker

It rained State ranks for Virudhunagar district in SSLC examination, results of which were declared on Thursday. Seven children scored 498 out of 500, followed by 18 scoring 497 and 29 getting 496.

However, the district, which has been consistently topping the State pass percentage list in SSLC examination from 1985 to 2011, lost to Erode by a whisker this year. It recorded a pass percentage of 97.98, an all-time high, losing out to Erode that registered 98.04 by .06 per cent.

As in the past, girl students bettered the performance of boys in all the three educational districts — Aruppukottai, Srivilliputtur and Virudhunagar — with Srivilliputtur recording the highest pass percentage of 98.52. The pass percentage was higher by 1.43 per cent than the previous year (96.55). The number of centum scorers has also risen from 5,076 in 2014 to 8,487 this year, with science accounting for 5,420. There was a drop in centum score in English, from 54 to 14.

Government schools topped the chart with 91 out of 178 registering cent per cent pass. In all, 191 schools had centum pass in the district. Among the government schools, E. Nivedita (496) of Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Pandalgudi; G. Umamaheshwari (493) of GGHSS, Chatrapatti; B. Janani (492), GGHSS, Pandalgudi; R. Divyabharathi (492), GGHSS, Chatrapatti; and M. Pethanamani (492), Government Higher Secondary School, Mettukundu, were the toppers.

Collector V. Rajaraman, who honoured the toppers, said that special coaching would be given for those who could not make it in the first attempt to appear for the examination to be held next month. Chief Educational Officer V. Jeyakumar thanked the teachers and heads of schools for the improved performance this year.
